The players of the Kendal Hammocks Red All-Stars soccer team are gearing up for their last game of the season. While some teams might feel pressure, for the Red All-Stars it’s another day to play the game they love. Justin Rodriguez, the team’s forward is a vocal leader on field, a trait he must have inherited from his dad, or as he’s known on the field, coach. Head coach Nick Rodriguez has been with the all-stars since he signed his son up for the team. Soccer is more than just a hobby for them; it’s a chance to bond. “It’s one of the things that I enjoyed growing up so I really understand the joy and the pleasure he gets out of it. To be able to share that with him and to be the first one directly teaching him is a pretty good feeling” says Rodriguez of sharing his favorite sport with his son.
Justin is not your average 6 year old. Once you meet him, it’s obvious he’s wise beyond his years. That’s another trait he gets from his father. Rodriguez was a teen dad. Although it wasn’t always easy, he took on fatherhood and his new life with his new best friend.
Justin is already racking up some impressive stats. He’s scored 14 goals this season alone. But for him it’s about more than just winning games. “I feel like I just won the world cup with my dad” says Justin of how it feels to be on the field with his dad after a big win. Although their regular season is almost over, the memories made out on this field will last them a lifetime.
