A Category 5 Storms hits Alabama

By Artanza McGuire

It was a hot and sunny afternoon in Stockbridge, and J.P. Moseley Park was the battlegrounds grounds for several teams in the North Henry County Youth Football League. The 9U Miami Hurricanes and 9U Alabama were already warming up on field 1. I managed to speak with a couple coaches from the Miami Hurricanes, and they introduced me to team mom, Shannon Inman. Mom Shannon gave me a brief overview of the Miami Hurricances, affectionately known simply as the “Canes” and explained that she was the team mom of both the 9U Hurricanes and the 9U Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. She shared that her two sons, #7 Justin Inman and #27 Austin Inman were both players on the GT Yellow Jackets squad. It takes a lot to be the team mom of one team, and not to mention the load of responsibilities for two teams.

It was time for the game to begin, and Head Coach Ken Borst and his boys were ready to take on Alabama. The Hurricanes started the 1st quarter with a touchdown by #5 Alec Jackson, followed by a successful 1 point conversion, setting the score at 7-0. Shortly after, #6 Jalan Earvin ran the ball and scored another touchdown against Alabama; 14-0. With 3:41 left in the 1st quarter, #4 Xavier Fox caught the ball and ran towards the end zone scoring the 3rd touchdown of the game, wrapping up the 1st quarter with a score of 21-0. In the 2nd quarter, with 6:03 on the clock, Hurricanes’ #1 Tyler Bell, flew right through Alabama’s defensive line and landed in the end zone. The score for the end of the 1st half was 28-0.

Earlier as the team watched the game from the Alabama sidelines, we noticed that there was a significant difference in the number of coaching staff between the Hurricanes and Alabama. Although there were several coaches leading on the Hurricanes sideline, there was only one man giving direction from Alabama’s sideline. At halftime, Generation Nexxt’s Tyrell Humphries, interviewed Alabama’s Head Coach, Coach J. During that interview, Tyrell brought up the fact that Coach J was an all-in-one coach, and that we acknowledged him and his efforts to coach an entire team on his own. The 2nd half was pretty much a repeat of the 1st. Due to the mercy rules implemented in the North Henry Youth Football League, after #2 Julien Davis scored another touchdown, resulting in a score of 34-0, the score was cleared off the scoreboard. Of course that didn’t sit well with the Hurricanes players and parents. So after some negotiation, the score was presented for a couple of seconds after each touchdown and then cleared off. Scoring the final touchdown by #3 Armani Anderson, the game ended with a final score of 41-0.

Immediately following the game I had the pleasure of interviewing Head Coach Ken Borst and several of the key players from the undefeated Miami Hurricanes. Coach Ken expressed how proud he was of his boys, and how his strategy to hit hard and have fun paid off in full. I inquired if Coach Ken was concerned that Alabama was going to make a comeback in the 2nd half, and replied that he wasn’t worried at all. Coach Ken and the entire coaching staff have done a great job preparing their boys on how to conduct themselves with the press, because during our interviewed they gave wonderful answers to all my questions.

Before we left the field, Mom Shannon enlightened me that both the Canes and the Yellow Jackets were coached by the same coaching staff and that they are scheduled to play against each other soon, which means that they will share the same coaches to both defend their undefeated records. If the 9U Miami Hurricanes are any reflection of the 9U GT Yellow Jackets, then that is sure to be one competitive matchup.

“I would like to thank you for your coverage of our football game against Alabama this past Saturday, August 31st. The Hurricanes were very excited about the interviews after the Game. They got to experience the excitement as the pros and the college players, something they will never forget.” - Shannon Inman, Team Mom 9U Miami Hurricanes
