South Florida FBU All Stars Road to the Dome

By Luis Gonzalez

As the season wraps up, and the holidays have come and gone. The 7th grade FBU All Star Team prepares to put an epic conclusion to their respective football seasons. The FBU National tournament started with 64 teams with one goal, to be the best in the country. This 7th grade FBU squad is attempting to make history, being the first South Florida team to bring home a Natty!!!

The National Championship matchup takes place today, Sunday, January 05, 2014, between the 7th grade Team South Florida and 7th grade Team Iowa at 4 pm in San Antonio's Alamo Dome.

Both these teams had to battle teams from all across the nation in a month long playoff bracket tournament, to get to this Frazier vs. Ali type, National Championship Game. South Florida's Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach Robert Jones of the Plantation Wildcats spoke to Generation Nexxt, "We had a long road ahead of us that started almost a month ago with our first rounds against Central Florida and South West Florida in Naples. These young athletes from different parks came together, learned a new system and worked their way thru the state.

Coach Robert also said, “Then thru the Regional round against Georgia, and South Carolina. Then we beat Indiana to get to the big game tomorrow against Iowa. It's amazing to see the nation's talent and get confirmation that South Florida is truly full of talent."

Nayquan Wright #21 RB/S, South Florida's starting running back, and team anchor, scored 2 rushing touchdowns in last week’s 32-0 dismantling of Indiana. Representing for the Pasadena Panthers Nayquan leads the entire tournament in rushing touchdowns.

Nayquan told Generation Nexxt, "I couldn't have done it without my great and athletic O-line. Against Iowa, I did what I do best from the jump; find the h*** and hit it full speed, and run downhill. Every play I’m thinking touchdown."

James Cook, RB/DE #23 agreed with his fellow Pasadena Panther saying, “We don't have anything to say, we're going to let our play do the talking, we are up to the challenge.”

With so much talent amassed on one roster, the team’s offensive strategy is a balance of an explosive run game, and a pin point accurate pass attack spear headed by fellow offensive team captain, Nick Scalzo #9 Quarterback. Nick told Generation Nexxt, "Our linemen are quicker and more athletic than the rest of the teams we've faced, because of our speed and athleticism no defense in the country can keep up with us. And no one can cover our wide outs, like Christopher Benestad #1, from the Coconut Creek Eagles, one on one!" Mason Bonawitz #68 OG/Linebacker agreed with his QB.

The defensive captain, Bonawitz leads the linebackers and has taken in the defensive scheme like a sponge. When asked about his FBU experience he told Generation Nexxt "This was an experience I couldn't have gotten anywhere else. The experience teaches you to be humble and helps you to be a better teammate."

Daniel Carter #28 RB/LB from the Plantation Wildcats added “I learned a lot, I got stronger, faster and most importantly I gained a lot of football knowledge." When asked about how South Florida matches up with Iowa's offense, Carter answered, "They get a lot of their TDS thru the air, so if we disrupt the WRs and QB we will win the game.” Nayquan promised a "Blowout, They won't score." This team has come a long way and is truly battle tested by the best of the best.

Lorenzo Floyd #12 WR/QB from the Pasadena Panthers 140’s surmised the all-star experience best when he said "I'm glad I made it this far with my Teammates. This FBU experience made me better and was invaluable. I Love It!!! Hopefully I'm on the team next year!"

Truly FBU is a collection of all stars, which helps young men, be better people, as well as, sharpening football technique and IQs. We here at Generation Nexxt want to wish our South Florida representation in the FBU National Championship as well as some of our top players playing the East Bay All-American Youth Bowl Game.
