WESTON WARRIORS 120's BOUNCE BACK AGAINST THE WILDCATS

WESTON WARRIORS 120’S BOUNCE BACK AGAINST THE WILDCATS

BY JONAH WOULLARD

The American Youth Football League showcased one of the top youth football matchups this past Saturday. This intense AYFL match up featured the (10-0) West Pines Wildcats against the (9-1) Weston Warriors for the number one seed in the 120 LB division.

The West Pembroke Pines Wildcats 120’s, head coached by Coach Pearson entered the last game of the AYFL regular season with a perfect record, undefeated in the regular season. The Warriors, head coached by Coach Demeter entered the game with a previous winning streak of 37 games, and had recently only one loss, which was to the Pembroke Pines Bengals.

The Weston Warriors traveled to the West Pembroke Pines Wildcats home field for this epic match up that would decide the top AYFL 120 LB. team. The Wildcats’ offense took the field first and would waste no time going for an early knockout blow. The Wildcats attempted a 30 yard deep post, which intercepted by Warriors’ safety #5 Miles Oldacre.

The Warriors’ interception on the first play from scrimmage set the tone for the rest of this highly anticipated contest. The Warriors’ offense, which is called by Head Coach Dave Demeter, kept the Wildcats’ defense off balance throughout the entire game. The Warriors’ offense orchestrated by quarterback, #4 David Demeter Jr., is a true field general, consistently executing the Warriors’ methodical offense. Also, #66 John Del Rio, the dependable offensive guard plowed holes open all day for Weston’s wing back, #12 Raheem Sullivan, who had a big game against the Wildcats.

Weston’s offensive game plan was to attack the Wildcats’ defense with their one, two punch combination. The combination of both Weston’s running back #22 James Houston, and fullback #33 Maris Martino gives the Warriors a balanced running attack which often allows the Warriors to use either back as a decoy. The Warriors’ game plan paid off against the Wildcats as both James & Maris scored a touchdown each against the West Pines defense. The Warriors’ converted both PAT’s by Weston’s kicker, #30 Cole Sanfilippo.

The Warriors’ defense, coached by defensive coordinator, Coach Gary Wain, held the Wildcats to one score the entire afternoon. Defensively, the Warriors played extremely aggressive; blitzing on early downs, containing the outside runs, and minimizing the Wildcats’ big play capability. The Warriors’ defensive surge was led by defensive tackle, #20 Brandan Robinson, whose presence was felt, often penetrating the Wildcats’ backfield. Both of Weston’s outside linebackers, #30 Cole Sanfilippo and #99 Daewood Davis contained the edges, making several sure hand tackles, forcing majority of the plays back into the strength of the Warriors’ defense.  The Warrior’ safety #5 Miles Oldacre, seemed to have nose for the ball all day, making a key interception and keeping all the plays in front him, which was an intricate part of preventing the Wildcats’ big plays.

Weston’s special teams, coached by RJ Martino, completed the Warriors’ strong performance of all three phases of game. The Warriors nailed all of their PAT attempts and had excellent kickoff and punt coverages against a team that can potentially break one for a big return at any given time. Head Coach, Dave Demeter said, “I’m most proud of my team because how they responded to adversity. We lost one game and could have let that impact the rest of our season. True champions learn from their losses and go back out to compete to get it right, and I’m glad we went back out there and got it right.”

The Weston Warriors defeat the West Pembroke Pines Wildcats 16-8 and enter the 2011 AYFL playoffs as the number seed team in the 120 LB. division with a record of 10-1.
